God-fearing Madmud used to extend hospitality to every stranger in his deserted home.
One day a venerable-looking traveler knocked on his door and asked permission to rest. Madmud showed hospitality, put food on the table and invited the guest to refresh himself. He happily agreed and began to gobble it up. Madmud asked him why he did not even thank God before eating. The traveler replied that he had never done this, and now he does not intend to. The pious owner became angry with the guest and drove him away.
That same evening, when the time came for the pious Madmud to indulge in prayer, God asked him why he drove away the tired and hungry guest. Madmud replied that he could not bear his ingratitude to God. God said to him:
“I’ve been putting up with him for 60 years, but you couldn’t put up with him for even one evening!”
