One Jew came to Dov Ber and began to complain that unclean thoughts and bad fantasies were bothering him, preventing him from thinking about good and holy things. He said:

Necessary means necessary. Rabbi Zeev kept a tavern not far from the city, in one of the villages. When the Jew got there, it was already night. And no matter how the guest knocked, no one opened for him. So he stood at the door until the morning.
In the morning the tavern was opened. The Jew went there and, following the advice of the preacher, asked for shelter for a few days. All this time the owner, Rabbi Zeev, did not say anything, did not ask anything. No wise advice, no harsh instructions. The Jew kept thinking about why he was sent here. And, not finding an answer, he decided to go home. Standing at the threshold, he said to the owner:
“The preacher sent me to you, but I don’t know why.”
Rabbi Ze'ev replied:
- I'll tell you why. So that you understand that when a person is the master of his home, uninvited guests will not enter him.
