They say that in ancient times the Moon was the bride of the Sun. They dreamed of getting married. But this was impossible, because then the world could have perished. The ardent love of the Sun would scorch the Earth, and the Moon would drown it in her tears. Of course, the Moon could put out the fire, but then it would evaporate the water on Earth.

The lovers were forced to separate. They dispersed in different directions. And now, when the Moon appears in the sky, the Sun disappears, so that they will never see each other again.

But these two loved each other very much and mourned the bitterness of separation for a long time. The moon cried day and night, her tears ran like a stream across the Earth to the sea. The sea became agitated and did not accept them into its bosom, so the tears of the Moon did not mix with the salty water of the ocean, which either advances, flooding the shores, or retreats.

From the tears of the Moon the Amazon River was born.

[This is the name of the Amazon in the middle reaches before its confluence with the Rio Negro]
