He asked Eve if she had any other children besides those she showed Him. She replied no. But in fact, she did not have time to wash some of the children and was ashamed to show them to God, and therefore hid them. God knew about this and said: “What must be hidden from Me, let it also be hidden from people.” Those children became invisible to human eyes, and began to live in the mountains and hills, in the hills and stones. From them came the elves, and people came from the children whom Eve showed to God. People never see elves unless they want to, but elves see people and can make people see them.
