One day the gods decided that people did not praise and extol them enough. In order to encourage people, teach them to enjoy life on Earth, and strengthen their faith, the gods decided to give them a special drink. The god Quetzalcoatl took on this task. He remembered the heavenly goddess Mayahuel, who was guarded by her grandmother in the “House of the Sun.”
Quetzalcoatl immediately went to heaven and found the grandmother and granddaughter sleeping. Quetzalcoatl woke up Mayahuel and said that he had come for her in order to bring her down to Earth to people. She agreed, and they found themselves among people. As soon as this happened, both turned into a tree with two branches, one of which was Quetzalcoatl, the other Mayahuel.
Meanwhile, the grandmother, waking up and not finding her granddaughter, immediately called other goddesses, and they all descended to Earth together to find the fugitive. When they reached the tree, both branches shook, and the old goddess, the grandmother, immediately recognized the Mayahuel branch. She took this branch, broke it and gave a piece to each goddess to eat.
But the branch of Quetzalcoatl remained untouched, and as soon as the goddesses ascended to heaven, the god again took on his usual appearance. He collected Mayahuel's bones and buried them in the ground. From them grew the agave plant, from the juice of which the Aztecs made wine.
