If people found him and asked him to read sermons, he would say a few words and retreat even further into the mountains, where it was not so easy to find him.
The Emperor heard about Kakua when he returned to Japan and asked him to give a Zen sermon. Kakua stood before the emperor in silence. Then he took the flute out of the folds of his robe and played one short note. He bowed politely and left.
