Old Man Kagena's Daughter

Old Man Kagena's Daughter

There lived one woman hunter. She had a father named Kagena. The old man walked leaning on two sticks. He had one eye and was blind in the other. They had five deer.

The girl hunted with her father’s manyitsik deer Hasanjay. This woman had arrows made of mammoth bone. She killed ten and twenty wild deer a day. When I saw wild deer, I shot an arrow at a whole herd.

One day she met a man while hunting. A huge man - the size of a large tree trunk. His arrows are strong, wooden, and his deer are as big as a big elk. His riding deer is big.

The man didn't say hello. Sitting on a riding reindeer, he asked the woman:

-Where are you going?

“I’m hunting,” said the woman.

That woman always spoke in songs, but the man spoke in ordinary words. The man, sticking out his tongue, laughed:

- You are a woman, what kind of hunter are you? The girl was ashamed, embarrassed, and moved on. Having driven within shooting distance, she looked back and sang:

- Bogatyr, why are you hurting me? Come on, shoot your father’s deer - Hasanjay-manytsik. You insult me!

Saying this, she took the manyk aside, took him by the end of the belt and stood him sideways. The man got off his deer and began shooting with a bow at the woman’s manytsik. Shot thirty-five times. Never hit. But he ran out of arrows. The woman said again:

“Come on, hero, look, I’ll shoot at your big man.”

“Come on,” said the man and put his manyk sideways, holding him by the belt.

The woman fired once and shot through the manytsik. That man's manytsik fell off...

Then the man said:

-Let's stop at one camp and hunt together.

“Okay,” said the woman.

Then they stopped in one place. The next day we went hunting in different directions. The woman killed ten wild deer, the man killed one. Both returned in the evening. The man went to the woman to find out how she was hunting. Poking his head into the entrance hole, he asked:

- How many did you kill?

- Bogatyr, I am a woman, what kind of hunter am I? Only one killed a dozen.

Then she asked:

- Well, hero, answer me, how many did you kill?

- I killed one.

The woman didn't believe it.

- How many did you kill, you say - one dozen, you say?

- No, no, no. He killed one, he said and raised his index finger.

The woman said:

- Bogatyr, what kind of hunter are you if you only killed one deer?

“We’ll hunt again tomorrow,” the man said.

- OK.

The next day they hunted again. The woman killed twenty wild deer, the man killed two. They returned in the evening. The man went to find out again. Poking his head into the entrance hole, he asked:

- How many did you kill?

- I killed two dozen. Tell me now, how many have you killed?

- I killed two.

The woman said:

- Bogatyr, how weak you are! Then the man said:

“Tomorrow we’ll hunt together again.”

The next day they hunted again. We saw thirty-five wild deer. Having sent the Manytsik, they began to shoot with arrows. The woman shot at all the deer and killed them all. The man didn't kill anyone.

The man felt ashamed that the woman was a better hunter than him, and he said:

- Tomorrow we will measure our strength ourselves.

- Okay, what to do!

The next morning the woman got up early and, at a distance where the antlers of a wild deer could not be seen, she sang:

- Come on, hero, shoot first!

The man started shooting at the woman. I never hit it. Couldn't kill a woman. The woman, as she flew, grabbed the ends of the arrows flying at her with her hands. The man shot thirty-five times with a bow. Finally his arrows ran out. Then the woman said:

- Come on, hero, look at me! The man became embarrassed and turned away. He then began to jump from side to side to prevent the woman from hitting him. The woman fired once, hitting the hero in the thigh. The hero fell, and the proud woman left.
