There lived a woman in China who helped a monk for over 20 years. She built him a small hut and fed him while he meditated. Finally, she wanted to know how much he had progressed during this time.
To determine this, she enlisted the help of one very sensual girl.
“Come and hug him,” said the woman, “and then suddenly ask him: What now?”
The girl invited the monk to her place and without much ceremony asked him what he intended to do.
“An old tree grows on a cold rock in winter,” the monk answered poetically. “There is not a drop of warmth there.”
The girl returned and conveyed the monk’s words to the woman.
“And to think that I fed this man for 20 years!” the old woman exclaimed in anger. “He paid no attention to your wishes, did not express an understanding of your condition. No one forced him to respond to your passion, but he should have at least shown compassion!”
She immediately went to the monk's hut and burned it.
