Old people say that in ancient times there lived a man whose wife died. He met a widow who agreed to marry him on the condition that he live in her house with her sons.

The hostess prepared a delicious meal to welcome him and killed a turkey to treat them all. But the man did not want to share the meal with the sons of the hostess, and while he was eating, he stepped on the children’s feet under the table so that they would not touch the meat served by their mother.

The man turned out to be lazy when it came to working in the fields, and the milpa did not prosper. When one day the hostess brought him food to the milpa, she found him sleeping.

Then she asked herself why her husband fell asleep during the day, and decided to stay awake to check what he was doing at night.

At night, someone came to the house, calling a man to come out and bring out coriander seasoning for meat. Meanwhile, the hostess pretended to be fast asleep.

One day, when the man had gone away with a strange nocturnal visitor, the housewife rose, lit a fire in the hearth, kneaded maize dough for bread, and husked some cobs to feed the pigs.

At dawn the man returned home. Very angry, she asked him where he had been. He replied that he went into the forest to relieve himself, but she replied that this was a lie, and that she was sure: he went to feast on human flesh.

She did not serve the man food, which caused him to vomit his food and go to the milpa. But night came and he did not return home. The next day the owner went to look for him and found him dead, abandoned in the middle of the milpa. She dragged the corpse on a rope to bury it.
