The Indian sage Narada worshiped God Hari. His devotion was so strong that one day he decided that there was no one in the whole world who loved God more than him.
God heard the revelations of his heart and said to him:
- Narada, go to the city on the banks of the Ganges; There lives one person devoted to me. Live with him, it will benefit you.
Narada went to the city and found a peasant there. He got up early in the morning, uttered the name of Hari only once, then took his plow and went to the field, where he worked from morning to evening. Just before going to sleep, he again uttered the name of Hari. Narada thought, “How can this simpleton be a devotee of God? After all, he’s busy solving his everyday problems all day!” Then God answered Narada:
— Fill the cup with milk to the brim and walk around the city. Then come back without spilling a single drop!
Narada did as he was told.
- How many times did you remember me while walking through the city? - asked God.
“Not once, Lord,” replied Narada. “How could I when you told me to be careful not to spill the milk?”
God replied:
“The cup captured your attention so much that you completely forgot about me.” Now remember the peasant: despite the fact that he is busy from morning to evening with worries about his family, he remembers me twice a day.
