Jiun, a master of the Shingon school, was a well-known Sanskrit scholar during the Tokugawa Era. When he was young, he lectured to his brother students. His mother heard about this and wrote him a letter:
“Son, I think that you have dedicated yourself to the Buddha because you want to become a walking encyclopedia for others. There is no end to facts and comments, fame and honors. I want you to stop these lectures. Take refuge in a small temple in the mountains. Devote your time to meditation and on this path achieve the true.”
