One day a Christian missionary preached among the miners. He began his fiery speech by telling the miners that a sinful person would go to hell and could only find salvation if he surrendered to Jesus Christ. Hearing the name of Jesus Christ, one miner asked:
- What is his number?
Since everyone in this company had a certain number, the miners could not imagine that Jesus Christ could be someone other than a miner who had his own serial number.
The missionary made another attempt, describing the horrors of hell.
“Hell,” he said, “is a place where it is very dark and damp.”
The miners looked at the missionary without any interest. This description of hell was similar to the description of the mine, which was like home to them.
The missionary then realized that he was preaching to people with a very limited understanding of reality and therefore decided to give other examples through which they could understand everything:
“And hell,” he said, “is a place where there are no newspapers!”
- Oh, terrible! What a nightmare! - the miners exclaimed. — Tell us more about Jesus.
