One day the Creator and the Creator, Tepev and Kukumats, got together and decided to create a person.

They made the first people from wood. They looked like people, spoke like people, and populated the entire earth. They lived and multiplied. But they had neither soul nor mind; They did not remember Tepeu and Kukumats with joy and wandered aimlessly across the earth, moving on all fours. Therefore, they soon fell out of favor with the gods.

Soon all the wooden figures were broken and destroyed by the gods. Their father Heart of Heaven sent a flood to the earth. A huge stream of resin poured onto the heads of the wooden dolls.

So they were punished for not thinking about their mother and their father - the Heart of Heaven named Hurakan. That is why darkness fell on the earth and a black downpour fell, which did not stop day or night.

And then the wooden people suffered from large and small animals, pots, frying pans and grain grinders, who all began to beat them at once. Even the red-hot stove stones, piled up, rushed from the hearth straight to their heads.

In despair, the wooden figures rushed in different directions. They decided to climb onto the roofs of houses, but the houses threw them down to the ground. They wanted to climb the trees, but the trees shook them away. Then they tried to hide in the caves, but the caves slammed shut in their faces.

They say that the descendants of those wooden dolls - monkeys - still live in the forests. The monkey is so similar to a person because it comes from those people who were just wooden figures.

Then the Progenitors, the Maker and the Creator, whose names were Tepeu and Kukumats, found what human flesh would be made of.

Yellow and white maize cobs were brought from Pashil. Here are the names of the animals that brought them: Yak - mountain cat, Utiu - jackal, Kel - parrot, Hob - raven. The animals told where they got the yellow and white cobs. They told Tepeu and Cucumatz to go to Pashil and showed them the way there.

So the Creator and the Creator found food, which became the flesh and blood of the person they created. Therefore, they say that maize entered human flesh at the behest of the Ancestors.

Everyone rejoiced that they had found a beautiful land full of blessings, where yellow and white maize, cocoa, and plants such as pineapple, sapote, nan-se, jocote grew in abundance, and where there was a lot of honey. This region is called Pashil and Kayala.

In short, there was plenty of all kinds of food: large and small fruits, large and small plants. And then Ishmukane - the grandmother of the twins Hunahpu and Xbalan-ke - ground white and yellow cobs and prepared nine drinks that gave strength and health. From these drinks the muscles and strength of man were created. According to legend, the Ancestors Tepeu and Cucumatz created human flesh from white and yellow cobs: they kneaded dough from maize flour, molded the body, arms and legs of the first four people and named them: Balam Quiche, Balam Akab, Mahu Kutah and Iki Balam.
