As he was dying, the Zen monk Bokuju asked his disciples to bring all his books, everything he had written, and everything he had said. It was all put together, but they couldn't figure out what he was going to do. And he began to build a fire out of books.

The students started screaming and yelling.

Bokuju, seeing this, said:

“I’m going to leave and I don’t want to leave any traces behind me.” I must not leave a single print of my feet. From now on, whoever wishes to follow me will have to follow himself. Anyone who wants to understand me will have to understand himself. That's why I destroy all these books.
