The kites and crows agreed among themselves that they would divide any prey in half.
One day they saw a fox wounded by hunters, lying helplessly under a tree, and gathered around her. Ravens said:
- We'll take the front half of the fox.
“Then we’ll take the back one,” the kites agreed.
The fox laughed at this and said:
“I always thought that kites are higher in birth than crows, and then they should get my front part, because it includes the head with the brain and other tasty parts.”
“Oh yes, it’s true,” said the kites, “we’ll take this part of the fox for ourselves.”
“But no,” the crows objected, “she is ours, as agreed.”
Here a real battle began between the disputants, many fell on both sides, and the few that survived barely escaped with their feet. The fox spent a few more days under the tree, feeding on killed crows and kites, and then left, strong and cheerful, remarking: “The weak win when the strong are at odds.”
