The Tofalars have long noticed that in the taiga, among the trees, cedar lives, perhaps, the longest. He saw and knows what happened around him for five whole centuries. Look, brother, what a long-liver he is! The cedar stretches its thick crown high up with strong branches and evergreen leaves. You can’t wrap your hands around it – it’s so big, thick and strong. Slender and proud, the handsome cedar matches our mighty Sayans. Huge mountain ranges are occupied by continuous cedar forests. Their gifts are abundant - pine nuts are used to feed people, animals, and birds.

The cedar has a good friend, and it is called the cedar tree. This is a special and noble bird. A big worker. She has cheek pouches, like your purse, and collects nuts there, and then reliably, as a reserve, hides them in the ground throughout the taiga. Where the tireless sower works, centuries-old trees grow.

A little bird does a big job.
