Jimmu-tenno (“ruler Jimmu”), in Japanese mythology, the first ruler of Japan, the divine founder of the imperial dynasty, a descendant of the solar goddess Amaterasu and the grandson of Hikoko no Ninigino Mikoto, whose heirs called themselves tenno - “descendants of the sky.” During his lifetime he was known under the names Toyo-mike-no and Kamuyamato-ivarebiko, and only after his death acquired the name Jimmu-tenno; he is believed to have ascended the throne in 660 BC. e. Jimmu Tenno made a campaign of conquest on the island of Kyushu. On the way, he was bewitched by a god in the form of a bear, and the entire army fell asleep. One of the warriors saw in a dream that Amaterasu was sending Jimmu-tenno a magic sword, and upon waking up, the warrior found the sword and gave it to the leader. The army, led by the prophetic raven, continued its march. Having won the victory and come to Yamato, Jimmu-tenno erected a marvelous palace and married a local princess.
