A few days later, the Jackal went to the Boar. “All your brothers,” he told him, “walk free, chew acorns, dig the ground with their fangs, extracting mealy tubers, and when they have eaten to their fill, they climb into their lairs and sleep as much as they want.” And at this time you,
whom everyone praises for his courage, you serve Leo as a mat. Ha ha!
These words put the boar in a bad mood and grunted angrily. That's all the jackal needed. He immediately ran to Lev and began to whisper to him:
- King of beasts, be careful! I think. The boar is planning to use his fangs against you!
— How do you know that the Pig is preparing to attack? - Lev asked.
“If you see that he frowns, it means he’s about to pounce,” answered the Jackal, although who doesn’t know that the Pig frowns his eyebrows for any reason.
After this, the Jackal returned to the Pig and said:
- Be careful, friend, the king of beasts has sworn to kill you!
- How would I know in advance that he is preparing to attack me? - asked the Boar.
“If you see his mustache quivering, be on your guard!” - answered the Jackal. But everyone knows that Leo’s mustache always quivers.
In the evening, when all the animals from Leo’s retinue gathered around the ruler. The Lion took a closer look at the Pig and noticed that he had frowned, and the Pig, secretly watching the Lion, also noticed how the king of beasts’ mustache was shaking. Without thinking twice, they attacked each other - claws against fangs, roars against grunts. The jackal jumped to the side and squealed:
- What a sad sight! What a miserable day! Come on, Lord Leo! Master Boar, come on!..
With a deft blow, Lev knocked down the Pig and broke his spine. The jackal immediately tore his throat out, tore him into four pieces, and they ate him in several sittings. The crafty man rejoiced in life, thinking to himself: “Great times have come!”
