One teacher of the highest level did not disdain the work of a farmer. He wrote many wise books and instructions. One day a man, who read all this and imagined himself as a seeker of the Path, came to him to talk about lofty matters.
“I have read all your books, teacher,” said the visitor, “I agree with some and disagree with others.” In some of them, again, I agree with some parts and do not understand others. I like some books more, others less. How can this be explained?
The sage farmer led his guest to a large barnyard, where there were many different animals and food for them. There he said:
- I am a peasant, a food producer. Do you see those apples and carrots? Some people like one thing, others another. Do you see cabbage and pumpkin? Some people like one thing, others another. Do you see these animals? People prefer some of them for riding, others for breeding, and others for eating. Some people like chickens, others like kids. The concepts of “like” and “dislike” cannot be a common denominator. All this is food.
