While preaching on Mount Gridharakuta, Buddha twirled a flower in his fingers, showing it to his listeners. Everyone was silent. Only Maha-Kashyapa tried unsuccessfully to remain dispassionate and smiled at this revelation.
Then the Buddha said:
“I have the gaze of the true teaching, the heart of nirvana, the true vision of the formless and the indescribable tread of dharma.” This is inexpressible in words, but is conveyed in a special way outside of the teaching. This I conveyed to Maha-Kashyapa.
