A certain person who considered himself enlightened heard that in such and such a city lives a wise Sufi who is engaged in trade and conducts it profitably. The man immediately wrote a stern and accusatory letter to this Sufi, urging him to be ascetic and develop indifference to the things of this world. The copies of the letter were distributed among seekers of truth, and this edification was highly appreciated.
One young man met the sage to whom the letter was addressed and asked him:
- Reverend, what do you think about this message?
- Nothing.
- How? Didn't the letter reach you?
- Got it. I receive letters, but I don’t read them. After all, letters belong to the things of this world, and I am indifferent to them.
