One miser met a Sufi in his travels, and they went together.
To while away the journey, the miser got into conversation. He told the Sufi how he made money by trading, how he saved every small coin, what countless riches he had accumulated during his life, and how he could not stand relatives who were jealous of his wealth.
- Just think: they’re all lazy! - the miser said excitedly. - Poor, hungry people! And for my frugality they called me a hoarder!
“They are wrong,” the Sufi answered seriously, “I have never met a more generous person in my life!”
- Is it true? — the miser asked in surprise and incredulity.
- Is it true. After all, you only imagine yourself to be thrifty. In fact, your generosity is limitless. For the day is approaching when you will distribute all your wealth to your heirs: both those you love and even those you cannot stand.
