Afandi wanted to know what was happening in the next world. Afandi went to the cemetery, chose one of the old graves, dug it up and swept it inside. Then he dragged a tombstone from a neighboring grave and placed it on top of his own. Lifting the slab and descending into the prepared grave, he stretched out in it to his full height and pretended to be dead.
At night two thieves came to the cemetery. Noticing a fresh grave, they quickly pulled away the stone slab and climbed inside.
Afandi mistook the thieves for angels who had flown to interrogate the dead man about worldly life and the strength of his faith, and therefore lay calmly, preparing answers to their questions.
But the thieves, without asking the dead man anything, began to take off his turban, robe, shirt, trousers and soft boots with galoshes. One of the thieves said to the other:
“We take four arshins of calico from other dead people, but here we got ready-made clothes!”
Here, having figured out the truth, Afandi jumped to his feet, attacked the robbers and, beating them, did not allow them to take away his clothes.
But the thieves had sticks with them, and, having beaten Afandi senseless, they, like a real dead man, put him back in the grave, and dragged all his things out and took them with them.
Having woken up, Afandi stood up and, as if he had just risen from the dead, completely naked, walked to his home.
Afandi's wife was horrified when she saw her husband naked.
- What's happened? she asked.
“Nothing,” Afandi answered calmly. -I returned from the other world.
- What did you see in the next world? — the wife asked, having calmed down a little. Afandi replied:
“When I climbed into the grave, lay down in it and prepared to answer the questions of the angels, they came and stripped me naked, beat me, and then took away all my clothes. That's it. It turns out that there is robbery in the next world too!
