In the hospital, in a double ward, there were two hopeless patients. They had exactly the same beds, absolutely equal conditions... The only difference was that one of them could see the only window in the room, and the other could not, but he had a button to call a nurse next to him. Time passed, the seasons changed... The patient, who was lying by the wall, was very sad, and his friend, who was lying by the window to entertain his neighbor, told him about everything that he saw there: that it was raining on the street, snowing or the sun was shining, that the trees were sometimes covered with light sparkling lace, sometimes covered with a light spring haze, sometimes decorated with greenery or a farewell yellow-scarlet outfit... That people were walking along the street, cars were driving... That there is PEACE out there. And then one day it happened that the first one, the one who was lying by the window, became ill at night. He asked his neighbor to call a nurse, but for some reason he did not do this. And the sick man lying by the window died.
The next day, another patient was brought into the ward, and the old-timer asked, since this happened, to put him by the window. His request was fulfilled - and he finally saw... That the window faced a blank gray wall, and apart from it nothing could be seen behind it. He was silent for a while, and then asked his new neighbor:
- You know... if I feel bad at night... don't call the nurse.
