I give my word as a Yorkshireman!

I give my word as a Yorkshireman!

All Yorkshiremen come from England, from the county of Yorkshire.

But then the Yorkshireman came to America - to New England - and became a real Yankee.

It is known that the Yankees are very fond of being cunning, shady, and haggling when they make a deal. But if they have already shaken hands, they will never go back on their word.

One day a Yorkshire farmer was plowing in his field when suddenly his horse fell right in the middle of the furrow.

The farmer left her lying where she had fallen, and immediately hurried to his neighbor, whose farm was about five miles from his.

He went up to the porch and knocked on the door.

The farmer invited his neighbor friend to come into the house and they talked about this and that.

In parting, the Yorkshireman asks:

- Do you know my white mare?

“Of course,” the hospitable neighbor answers.

- Do you want to exchange her for your bay?

- Welcome! - the farmer agrees.

- So, it's a deal? And they shook hands.

Then the Yorkshireman remarks casually:

- Yes, that means the white mare is lying on a furrow in the field. It fell this morning when I was plowing on it.

“Well,” the farmer notes, “my bay died on Tuesday.” His skin hangs in the stable.
