Anwar Abbasi says:
“I saw a dervish, intoxicated by God, sitting on the side of the road, covered only with a torn blanket.
A generous man, a rich merchant, who also saw this, hurried to his store and brought back an expensive cashmere shawl. He carefully covered the sleeping dervish with it, rejoicing at the opportunity to be useful to the servant of the divine.
I continued to watch, and soon I saw the royal soldiers approaching along the road, accompanied by a certain scientist whom they met along the way. They noticed a sleeping dervish. The scientist began to say something, animatedly gesticulating, and the soldiers rushed to beat the poor fellow. They tore off his shawl and threw him into the river.
For his part, he didn’t say a word. When I approached him to ask his opinion about what happened, he said:
“My friend, you should not blame worldly people if they, seeing a dervish covered with a precious shawl, attack him with curses. If they did what was unusual for themselves, there would be no such things in the world as dervishes, shawls, scientists and soldiers.”
