But then they saw that the entire wall was overgrown with grass on top. This upset them very much - after all, what a good mowing is wasted! They began to consult with each other on how to get to this grass and what to do with it. Some believed that grass should be reaped with a sickle. However, no one dared to climb such a high wall with a sickle. Others believed that it was necessary to find good shooters and knock down every blade of grass with a self-propelled gun. But, as you already know, there were no sharp shooters in Schild.
At the end, the mayor took the floor.
“Why do we need to reap this grass,” he said, “or use self-propelled guns to knock down blades of grass?” Let's put a cow on the wall, she will eat all the grass there.
All Schildburgers liked this advice. And in gratitude, they decided to let the mayor’s cow be the first to hang on the wall. He readily agreed.
So they brought in a cow, tied a noose around its neck, threw a rope over the wall and let everyone pull and lift the cow up. The cow began to choke, and when they raised her higher, she completely stretched out her tongue. The mayor, when he saw this, immediately shouted:
- Pull faster! It was she who smelled the grass on the wall and reached out to it with her tongue.
But no matter how much the Schildburgers pulled the rope, they failed to lift the cow up.
And when they lowered her to the ground again, the spirit was gone from the cow.
That’s why the entire Schildburger community was overjoyed! Now they had something to skin and something to eat, although there was still a lot of time left before the meat-eater.
