How a monk saved his ears

How a monk saved his ears

There lived a husband and wife. They would have had complete agreement on everything if only. As soon as the wife cooked something tastier for dinner, the husband jumped out into the street and dragged the first passer-by to the table. He was such a person that a piece not seasoned with conversations and jokes would not go down his throat.

Well, what about the wife? Why should she be happy when all she got from lunch was gnawed bones. She received the seasoning the same way as her husband, but jokes alone won’t fill you up. She persuaded her husband, and became angry, and threatened. But her husband only answered:

- Dear wife, is it my fault that you are such a good housewife? I want to show the whole world how wonderfully you cook.

What woman can resist such praise! Hearing these speeches, the wife stopped getting angry.

But one day she bought a couple of fat quails at the market. She returned home and said to her husband:

– Today, please don’t call anyone. There are only two quails, just right for you and me. Now I’ll gut them, sharpen my knife sharper.

“Okay, wifey, be it your way, I won’t call anyone,” the husband answered, took the knife and went outside to sharpen it on a stone by the porch.

As luck would have it, a fat monk passed by. The husband could not resist and invited him to dinner.

He led him into the room and said:

“Little wife, engage the holy father in a worthy conversation while I sharpen the knife.”

Then the wife’s patience came to an end, and she decided to teach her husband a lesson.

“Oh, holy father,” she said quietly to the monk, “it’s scary to think that now you will lose your best decoration.” Do you know why this villain sharpens a knife? He invites innocent people into the house, cuts off their ears, fries them and eats them.

Hearing this, the monk picked up the skirts of his cassock and, although he was fatter than a hog, rushed down the street like a light-footed deer.

-What happened to him? - shouted the surprised husband.

“Nothing happened to him,” the wife answered, “but our quails flew away.” The monk took them with him without even saying thank you.

Then the husband rushed to catch up with the monk.

“Hey, Holy Father,” he shouted as he ran, “is this fair?” Why do you need two? Give me at least one little thing!

But the monk did not want to lose even one ear. So he ran even faster.

“Listen, holy father, I’ll make peace at least halfway!”

The poor fellow shouted in vain. The monk soon disappeared completely from sight.

The husband was so upset that he sat down on a stone by the road and sat until the evening. Meanwhile, the wife fried the quails and ate everything to the last bone.

From then on, my husband began to invite only good friends to dinner, and only on holidays.
