How a gypsy drove the devil away

Whether it happened or not, the old people talk, but I myself won’t lie.

A gypsy and a gypsy lived in a village.

And then such a misfortune happened that one day the gypsy’s husband fell ill and died.

They lived together for very little time, they didn’t even have one child, but they loved each other deeply. Time passes, but the gypsy woman cannot forget her husband.

On the contrary, every day she remembers him more and more often; one might say, she almost went crazy from this melancholy.

The devil sees this thing and thinks: “Let me get to this gypsy, it’s too right a time for this.” The devil flew to this village and jumped into the chimney - only sparks fell. He appears to a gypsy woman, looking exactly like her buried husband. At first the gypsy was surprised, scared, but then she was happy...

From then on, the devil got into the habit of flying to the gypsy every night. She was a beautiful woman, why not fly?

“Just be careful,” says the devil, “don’t say a word to anyone that I’m visiting you, otherwise you won’t see me again.”

She wouldn’t have said it, but the neighbors themselves guessed: before, if you asked a gypsy, she would let you into her bathhouse, but now she won’t do anything; She used to be often in public, but now you rarely see her anywhere. The neighbors began to keep an eye on her, and one day at midnight they looked: what is it? - a pillar of fire flies across the sky and flies into the chimney of the house where the gypsy lives.

- What's going on with you, neighbor? - the women ask the gypsy in the morning.

With nowhere to go, the gypsy had to tell everything.

- Eh, dear, so it’s the evil spirits that have taken hold of you...

From then on, there was talk and gossip behind the gypsy's back.

A year has passed, and the gypsy’s baby is born.

“That’s good,” the devil thinks, “I need to take my son with me.” As he said, so he did: the child did not live even a day before he died. The gypsy woman began to cry, and the neighbors said to her:

– Do this, this and that, and then the evil spirits will leave you behind.

The gypsy woman took the child to church for the funeral service, and the devil said to her:

- If you bring a baby, don’t open the coffin... So the gypsy brought the coffin to the church, but she couldn’t get it out of her head: “Why did he tell me this?” The gypsy couldn’t resist, opened the coffin, and looked: there was no one there.

So they sang the funeral service, buried it, who knows what, one might say, they put an empty space in the ground. The gypsy returned home and did as her neighbors taught her. Before the devil came, she prepared the collar, but as soon as it flew towards her through the stove, the gypsy immediately put the collar on it. The devil got mad, began to rush around the hut, broke all the dishes, tore all the feather beds.

He raised such a storm that God forbid, and then he screamed and flew out of the chimney.

The gypsy did not see him again.
