Once, back in the days of slavery, one lord came to visit another, and they began to tell each other about their hunting adventures. They described their exploits with might and main - after all, everyone wanted to outdo the other. And so the owner tells the guest that he once managed to wound a deer in the hind leg and ear at once with one bullet. The guest was surprised and didn’t believe it. An argument broke out between them and the owner. Then the lord called his black servant, who accompanied him during the hunt, as a witness.
“Negro,” the owner tells him, “explain to this senor how it happened.” Do you remember, I shot at a deer and hit him in the back leg and ear right away.
The Negro was embarrassed, it was a very obvious lie, but, not wanting to let the owner down—he would have given him a big pounding for it—he said:
“That’s true, senor, because when the owner shot, the deer scratched its ear with its hind leg.” So the black man helped out his boastful owner.
