One day, sitting in the garden, David saw a hornet devouring a spider.
- What is the use of these Thy creatures, Lord? - he said. — The hornet spoils the honeycombs and does not produce anything useful; The spider weaves for a whole year, but there is nothing to wear.
- David! - answered the Creator. -Are you mocking My creations? The time will come when you will need them.
Fleeing from the persecution of Saul, David hid in a cave. The Lord sent a spider, and it covered the entrance to the cave with a web. Saul came and saw that the entrance was covered with cobwebs. And he left without entering the cave.
Coming out of his hiding place and seeing what was happening, David was ready to kiss the spider.
“Blessed,” he said, “is He who created you, blessed be you too!”
After this incident, David learned that Saul was camped on the hill of Gahilah, and he went to that place. Saul slept in the tent. And there lay Abner, Saul's captain. Abner was of gigantic stature and with his body he occupied the entire space along the tent so that his head was at one entrance to the tent, and his legs reached the opposite. When David appeared, Abner lay with his legs bent at the knees, and David walked under his knees, and at that moment, when David, with Saul’s spear and a vessel of water, was about to leave, Abner suddenly began to straighten his legs, like two giant logs, lowering them over David. David cried to the Lord:
- My God! My God! Why have you left me?
The Lord brought a hornet against Abner; the stung giant bent his legs again - and David could freely leave the tent.
And David sang praises to the Lord.
