The Slavs are one of the most ancient peoples on Earth. The historical roots of the Slavs go back to the times when the Slavs stood out from the common family of Indo-European, Indo-Iranian (Aryan) peoples. Therefore, the Russian language (like other Slavic languages) is revered as a very ancient Aryan language; it is close to Sanskrit (the now “dead” language of the Vedas, only Brahmins know it in India).
The history of the Slavs and Proto-Slavs should be studied sequentially. First, study prehistory - those times about which myths and legends tell, and then history itself - those times from which written evidence has survived to this day. The most important aid to the study of ancient history is archaeological science.
The prehistory of the Slavs is divided into periods - mythological, myth-legendary and legendary. And the actual history of the Slavs is divided into legendary-historical and historical periods.
Mythological period. Vedic myths (Slavic, German-Scandinavian, Iranian, Indian, etc.) tell about this time. Myths about the Birth of the World and the deeds of the gods tell the story of the spiritual metahistory of humanity and apply to all peoples of our planet. Myths have many layers of meaning. According to one approach, it is also possible to isolate specific historical realities from mythological images: ancient disasters, climate change, migrations of ancient peoples (Russian and Slavic myths contain data on the settlement of the Proto-Slavs).
Help for dating certain ancient events captured in myths is paleogeology, paleoclimatology, and, to a lesser extent, archeology.

Legendary, or Prehistoric period, otherwise “the time of ancient kingdoms.” Legends, epics, songs of various Slavic peoples, as well as sacred texts that contain historical information and legends tell about this period. The names of ancient Slavic leaders and princes appear in the chronicles of neighboring states. Archaeological monuments of this period are numerous and significantly complement the data on the history of the Slavs of this era. Time - from the middle of the 2nd millennium BC. and until the III-IV centuries AD.
Legendary historical period. Both legends and historical chronicles of the Slavs and neighboring peoples tell about this time (from the 3rd to the 8th centuries AD). From this period, a lot of information has been preserved both about the Slavic principalities and kingdoms, and about the Slavic dynasties, and about many wars of those years. The history of this era is being restored in all the most important details.
Historical period. Information about this time is so numerous and extensive that this allows us to talk about a complete restoration of the picture of the life of the Slavs. From the 5th to the 10th century is the time of development of the Slavic states in line with the Vedic and pagan traditions. At the same time, the Christian religion already existed and was gaining strength. From the 10th to the 16th centuries there was a gradual decline of the Vedic and pagan religions, a time of religious civil strife, dual faith, foreign yoke, dependence on foreigners and foreigners. From the 17th century to the present day - the persecution of pagans, the extinction of the ancient faith, the time of the last guardians of the faith.
