Mullah came to the city for the first time in his life. Wandering the streets, he wandered into the market. The first thing that caught his eye was a grocery store. Mulla did not know what they were selling there, and upon entering the shop, he saw a man sitting and around him were wooden trays with sultanas, peaches, almonds, pistachios and everything tasty in the world. But the man did not eat any of these delicacies.
At first Mulla thought: “Perhaps this man is blind and does not see what delicious things are laid out around him!” The mullah approached him and made sure that the man was watching. But then, after standing a little longer and thinking, he decided that he was probably blind from birth - he looked, but did not see.
To make sure whether he was right or wrong, Mulla approached the grocer and raised two fingers to his eyes. He shouted:
- What are you doing? Almost gouged out my eyes. Mulla was surprised:
- Do you see?
- Why can’t I see? - asked the grocer.
- If you see, then why don’t you eat?
- If I eat, I will harm myself.
Hearing this, Nasreddin grabbed a whole handful of sultanas and almonds and began to devour them.
- What are you doing? - the grocer shouted.
- What do you care? - Mulla asked. - May the harm come to me.
