One day, a certain respected city dweller came to Solomon, who was enjoying the spectacle of fish splashing in a pond, and said: “King, I’m confused!” Every day of my life is similar to the previous one, I don’t distinguish dawn from sunset, and I no longer know happiness.
Solomon thought for a moment and said: “Many would dream of being in your place, of owning your house, your gardens and your wealth.”
And the wise king asked: “What are you dreaming about?”
The petitioner answered: “At first I dreamed of being freed from slavery.” Then I dreamed that my trading would generate income. And now I don't know what to dream about.
Then Solomon said: “A man who does not have a dream is like the fish that swim in this pond.” Every day of their life is similar to the previous one, they do not distinguish dawn from sunset and do not know happiness.
The king also added: “Only, unlike the fish, you locked yourself in your pond.” If there is no good purpose in your life, you will wander aimlessly around your house and, when you die, you will realize that you lived in vain. If there is a goal, every time you take a step, you will know whether it has brought you closer to your goal or furthered you, and this will fill you with excitement and passion for life.
The petitioner wrinkled his forehead and said: “Does this mean that every time I achieve one goal, I must look for the next one, every time one of my dreams comes true, I must make another, and only in searching will I find happiness?”
And the king answered: “Yes.”
