Indians from the villages surrounding Uxmal say that Tsukan is a Serpent with wings and his name is Hapaykan. He once lived in the depths of the swamp in Izamal. But then this quagmire dried up and Tsukan left it. Moreover, there were no more children left that he devoured. In one year he ate forty-one children. With just the heat of his breath, Hapaikan pulled young victims into his mouth. It was enough to be 10 meters away from him, and the child’s fate was sealed.
There were so many ingenious labyrinths in the Tsukana cave that, once in them, it was no longer possible to get out. Once a year, in the month of August, this Serpent flies out from its lair to visit the four countries of the world. First he goes north, then south, then west and finally east. The guard awaiting Hapaikan's return is guarding the Serpent in his terrible cave.
…They say that seven years before Ium-ku (God) begins to judge the world, children will stop being born and the wells will dry up. Only in the middle of Uxmal Square will an old woman sell water from a gourd vessel. And this amount of water will cost as much as one day of a child’s life. Hapaikan will come out of his cave and swallow all the rulers who were unjust, cruel and deceitful.
