One fakir from India asked a Sufi if he would tell him the Greatest Name: the Hundredth Name of Allah. Those who know it can perform miracles, changing the course of life and history. No one can know him unless he is worthy.
Sufi said:
“In accordance with tradition, I must first subject you to a test that will show your capabilities.” You will go to the gates of the city and stay there until evening, and then return and describe what you see.
The fakir enthusiastically did as he was told. When evening came, he returned and told the sage the following:
“As I was told, I took my place at the city gates in a state of vigilance. The incident that made the strongest impression on me during the day involved an old man. He wanted to enter our city with a huge bundle of firewood on his back. The guard insisted that he pay tax on his goods. The old man, having no money, asked permission to sell the firewood first. Seeing that the old man was alone and defenseless, the guard forced him to throw away the firewood, which he took for himself, and drove the old man away with cruel blows.
Sufi asked:
- How did you feel when you watched this?
The fakir replied:
“I wanted to know the Greatest Name even more. If I had known him, circumstances would have turned out differently for this unfortunate and innocent woodcutter.
Sufi said:
- Oh, man born to achieve bliss! I myself learned the Hundredth Name from my Master, after he tested my resolve and found out who I was: an impulsive, emotional nature or a servant of man; and then he took me through situations that allowed me to see my own thoughts and behavior. The Hundredth Name is intended to serve all humanity, at all times. My Master is none other than the woodcutter you saw today at the city gates.
