The trouble is that over time, the dirt eats in deeper, and it becomes more difficult to wash it off: so you have to boil it, burning your fingers and peeling the skin from your palms, rub, rub, rub... Many days, many years. Can you imagine how many dirty shirts can accumulate over the course of a human life? You can wash your clothes as they get dirty. While the dirt is fresh, other stains can be washed off with plain water. Others have to be washed with soap. And the third, the deepest ones - to etch with caustic alkali, which makes the eyes water. Every laundress will tell you that the most difficult thing to wash off is grease and blood. Our sins and unseemly deeds are dirty laundry, and everyone is their own laundress. We have been given a unique opportunity - in some ways happy, in some ways bitter - not to accumulate sins all our lives, until the very moment when our earthly deeds are summed up, but to begin to atone for them during our lifetime - that is, in that period of time when it is still possible to correct something. This is correct and logical, so you shouldn’t be surprised that after each white stripe there is a black one: can you imagine what kind of blackness would await us all after absolute whiteness?
