Krishna was Arjuna's spiritual master.
One day, sitting in a circle of disciples, he preached truths that were inaccessible to people living in slavery to their sensual nature.
“The body,” he said, “the outer cover of the soul, is something finite; but the soul abiding in it is something invisible, inaccessible to decay, eternal. Earthly man is threefold, like God, whom he reflects in himself: he has a mind, a soul and a body. To achieve perfection, you need to master the science of unity, which is higher than wisdom, you need to rise to the divine essence, which is higher than the soul and higher than the mind. The divine essence, this supreme friend, resides in each of us, for God is within every person, but few people know how to find Him.
Arjuna impetuously addressed Krishna:
- Let us see Him, if possible.
And then Krishna began to speak with inexpressible power about the Being who breathes in every creature, has infinitely varied forms and images and looks with countless eyes. When he spoke like this, a ray of light of such mighty power lit up in his eyes that the disciples could not stand its brilliance and fell prostrate at his feet. The hairs on Arjuna's head stood on end, and, obediently folding his hands and bowing, he said:
- Lord! Your words frighten us; we are unable to look at the high Being that you evoke before our eyes. His sight shocks us.
Krishna further taught:
“Many births are behind me and behind you, O Arjuna!” I know them all, but you don't know yours. And although by my nature I am not subject to birth and death and am the Creator of all things, nevertheless, commanding my nature, I manifest myself with my own power. And whenever virtue falls in the world, and vice and injustice prevail, I become visible, and thus I am born from age to age for the salvation of the just and the destruction of the evil, and for the restoration of the righteous law.
Krishna always spoke about the Living God. This delighted and fascinated people, but sometimes some scientist or proud man asked him in disbelief to explain the nature of God. Krishna answered like this: “A person’s learning is full of vanity, all his good deeds are deceitful if he does not do them in the name of God.”
