Once upon a time there lived a woman, and she had a daughter. The girl couldn’t sit at home in the evenings—she would run to the neighbors or visit her relatives. Her mother told her:
“Don’t leave the house, daughter, the kibungo will catch you and eat you!” But the stubborn, naughty girl ignored her words. And then one night the kibungo grabbed her, put her in a sack and carried her into the forest. The girl sang:
- The kibungo grabbed me,
Dragging me into the forest
Help me mom
Kibungo will eat me.
And her mother answers:
- Your mother told you
Don't you dare walk around at night!
The girl heard this, and go ahead and call other relatives for help, but no one came out, everyone answered her the same thing. The girl is crying, and the kibungo is dragging her further and further. He carried her past houses where her other relatives lived, but no one began to help her. Then her grandmother heard people shouting:
- Kibungo grabbed the girl!.. He’s dragging her into the forest!.. The old woman rushed as fast as she could to the hearth, put a pot on the fire and heated a spit in the coals. When the kibungo passed by her house, the girl began to sing:
- The kibungo grabbed me,
Dragging me into the forest
Help, grandma,
Kibungo will eat me.
But her grandmother answered her like everyone else. Kibungo was happy and went on his way. Meanwhile, the grandmother grabbed a pot of boiling water, rushed outside and splashed boiling water on the kibungo’s heels. Kibungo jumped up and dropped the bag with the girl. Then the grandmother grabbed a red-hot skewer from the fire and stuck it into the kibungo’s neck. He died. The grandmother took her granddaughter in and never let her see her parents again. And the girl lost the desire to run around the neighbors when it got dark.
