One hardworking peasant was working hard in his garden. And then one day he discovered in the garden such a large pumpkin as he had never seen before. The peasant was surprised, delighted and, after thinking about it, decided that it would not be a shame to offer such a pumpkin to the Negus himself.
And he went to the negus with his gift.
Negus was pleased and, as a sign of gratitude, ordered that the peasant be given one of his horses. The delighted peasant accepted the gift, thanked the Negus and left.
The news of this spread throughout the city. And then one rich man thought: “If the Negus rewarded the peasant so generously for the pumpkin, then what will he give if he gives him a good horse?” Having chosen the best of his horses, he brought it to the Negus as a gift.
And the Negus understood the rich man’s cunning. He accepted his horse and thanked him. Then he called the servant and said:
“Here is the man who gave me a beautiful horse.” For this horse I will give him the pumpkin that the peasant brought me.
