Once upon a time in the Western Fjords there lived newlyweds who loved each other very much. The husband fished and was a good sailor.
One morning his wife looked at the weather and asked her husband not to go out to sea:
- Because any ship that sails today will sink.
He replied that he would go to sea, no matter what she predicted. She said that then he would not return.
“Well, no,” he said, “I’ll come back to you in the evening.”
“No,” she answered. - If you leave, you won't come back.
“It will be so,” he said, “that I will return, you can rely on it.”
Then he swam away, and it happened as she said: in the afternoon the wind rose and all the boats that went out to sea sank, and he too.
In the evening he came home in wet leather clothes and lay down in his place without saying a word. In the evening, the wife went to bed, but he did not lie down next to her, but wandered slowly all night.
The next day he got to work. In the summer he worked more than two people in the hayfield, and the following winter he looked after the cattle and made no attempt to interfere in the affairs of others. All who had sight saw him, but he never said anything.
So one young man wooed a widow, and she agreed. He arrived there in the spring. But a few nights later he was found dead, torn into pieces.
Then the ghost disappeared and did not appear during the summer, but returned in the fall and spent the winter in the house. Three years passed like this. He did not kill any people or animals, except this one man.
People got tired of his impudence, and they found a man who, it was believed, would be able to deal with him better than others, and he made sure that he never showed up again.
After this, the widow got married and was happy until her death.
