Ananda had a brother who was completely stupid and incapable. But he also wanted to learn from Buddha. And one day, violating Ananda’s prohibition, he approached the Buddha and with tears began to beg to give him personal practice.
“But,” he said, “I can’t do anything.” I can't even remember more than four words at once.
“Okay,” said the Buddha, “four words are enough.” We'll even group them into two two-word phrases so you don't have to strain your mind too much. Here, take this broom and go sweep the floors. When you sweep to the left, say: “I am sweeping the floor,” and when the broom moves to the right, say: “I am growing spiritually.”
This man achieved enlightenment, and before his much-knowing brother, because, as is known, according to legends, Ananda was the last to achieve enlightenment, after the death of his Teacher.
