The ruler of a certain city unexpectedly ordered a Sufi teacher to be thrown into prison. The disciples who came to visit their teacher in captivity were amazed to see him greeting them as joyfully as if they had come to his home.
- Teacher, what is your consolation here? - the students exclaimed.
“Four sayings console me,” answered the Sufi. “Here’s the first one: “No one can avoid evil, for everything in the world is predetermined by fate.” Here is the second: “What can a person do in misfortune but patiently endure his suffering? After all, in the entire Universe you are not the only one experiencing something similar.” Here is the third: “Be grateful to fate that the worst did not happen - it is always possible.” And finally, here is the fourth: “Deliverance may be near, although you may not know it.”
At this moment, the guards came with the news that the Sufi was free, for it turned out that the order had been issued by the ruler by mistake.
