Food and feathers

Once upon a time there lived a man who studied. Every day he went to the Sufi mentor and, sitting at his feet, wrote down everything that the Master said. He devoted so much time to teaching that he had no way to earn a living.

One evening when he came home, his wife placed a pot covered with a napkin in front of him. He took it off, tied it around his neck, and then saw that the pot was full of paper and feathers.

“You do this all day long, so try to be full,” said the wife.

The next morning the student, as usual, went to his Teacher. Although his wife's words upset him, he did not go looking for work, but followed his usual routine.

He, as usual, began to write down the Teacher’s words, but after a few minutes he discovered that his pen was not writing well.

“Nothing,” said the Master. “Take the box there in the corner and put it in front of you.”

The student did as he was told. Taking his seat again, he opened the lid of the box: it was full of food.
