The wise Dadhyanch almost lost his head for revealing the cow's secret. Dyaus, the father of Ushas, the beautiful goddess of the dawn, who was once a brilliant and powerful ruler of the sky, was cast down to earth for the sin of stealing a sacred cow and doomed to become a man from a god. They say that one day Dyaus and his wife came to the protected forest on the top of Himavat. In that forest they saw the wonderful cow Nandini, who fulfills all wishes, the daughter of the ancestor of cows, Surabhi. The divine cow was given to the great sage Vasistha, who owned that forest. And at that time the pious Vasishtha, the son of Varuna, left his monastery.
“Look,” Dyaus said to his wife, “here is the wonderful cow of the wise Vasishtha. A mortal who tastes her milk will live ten thousand years without illness or old age.” Then Dyaus's wife became eager to take possession of a cow, whose milk would grant longevity. “I have a friend on earth among mortals, a princess of the Ushinar tribe,” she said. - For her sake I want to have this cow. Bring her to me!” And, wanting to please his lotus-eyed wife, Dyaus stole Vasishtha's cow.
Returning to his abode, Vasishtha did not find the magical cow Nandini, the daughter of Surabhi, in the forest. With his inner vision, he discovered the truth and recognized the kidnapper. The great ascetic, the son of Varuna, gained immeasurable power through mortification and piety. He cursed Dyaus and returned his cow. By the force of his curse, the proud god was deprived of his heavenly abode, and for many years Dyaus fell to the fate of a mortal man.
