Enuma Elish - Table II

Enuma Elish - Table II
Enlight

The wise Ea informed Anshar about Tiamat’s preparations for the battle against the younger generation of gods. His story is a verbatim repetition of lines 129-162 of Table I. Anshar tries to persuade the conqueror Apsu to oppose Tiamat. The text of Ea's answer is destroyed, but from the context it is clear that he advises sending Anu to negotiate with her. Anu goes, but after only looking at Tiamat, she returns in fear. The gods are at a loss. Then Anshar remembers young Marduk. He agrees to fight Tiamat, but in return asks for primacy among the gods and the right to determine destinies.

“If I become an avenger for you,

So that Tiamat can overcome and save your lives, -

Gather the Council, raise my lot,

In Ubshukin, sit down together joyfully,

My Word, like yours, decides destinies,

May everything that I create remain unchanged!

And no one can cancel the order of my lips.”
