Three people found a jug full of gold. They began to think about how to divide it, but could not agree. Then one of them said:
“We have an honest and fair old man in our village.” Let's go to him and ask him to divide the gold.
They came to the old man and said:
- You are an honest old man, divide this gold between us fairly!
“Okay,” said the old man, “I’ll be happy to divide your gold, just tell me how to divide - fairly or divinely?”
“Divide like God,” the men said.
The old man pulled the jug of gold towards him and began to divide it. He gave most of it to one, very little to another, and even less to the third. The men were unhappy with this division.
- You divided it wrong! - they began to shout.
- Why is it wrong? I divided it as you asked - in a divine way. After all, how does God divide? He gives a lot to one, little to another, and almost nothing to a third. “That’s how I divided your gold,” the old man answered.
Then the men asked to divide the gold not according to God, but according to justice. And the old man divided the gold into three equal parts.
