There was a drought in one place. Farmers irrigated their fields by running water through ditches from long distances. One farmer had great determination and strength of character. One morning he firmly decided to dig his ditch until he brought it to the river and brought water to his field. Once he started working, he soon lost all concept of time. The breakfast hour came and went. His wife called him to go home to wash and eat.
“Breakfast will get cold,” she said, “leave work and go home.”
At first the farmer did not pay attention to her words, but then he asked her to go home and not disturb him.
“You don’t understand,” he said, “that because of this terrible drought, nothing will grow here.” There will be nothing to feed the children, and we will all die of hunger. I decided to bring water to our field at any cost today. Then I will wash myself and eat.
Hearing this, his wife went home, and the farmer worked all day and by evening he dug a ditch to the river. Then he sat down on the ground and watched with delight as the stream of water ran towards his field. His mind was calm and happy. He went home, called his wife and said:
“Now give me something to eat and fill my pipe.”
He washed his face, ate happily and fell into a deep sleep.
Another farmer, who also wanted to bring water to his field, was also called by his wife at noon:
“Go home, wash yourself and eat,” she said.
And he immediately threw down the shovel and exclaimed:
- Honey, when you call me, I have to go.
And his field remained dry.
Just as a farmer cannot irrigate his field, so a person striving for God cannot reach Him without firm determination.
