A dervish sat on the bank of the river in calm contemplation. A passerby came up from behind and, seeing the dervish’s bare neck, could not resist and loudly slapped it. The sound of his hand hitting the fleshy neck greatly surprised the passerby, and the dervish, experiencing burning pain, rose to answer the offender.
“Wait,” he said, “you can hit me if you want.” But first, give me the answer to this question: Was that slapping sound made by my hand or your neck?
Dervish replied:
- Answer yourself. I have no time to talk right now, I’m in pain. It’s you who wants to build all sorts of theories, because you don’t feel what I feel.
