Walking through the streets, a woman saw a crying Kurd at the entrance to the mosque.
- Why are you crying? – she asked.
He told her:
“I gave my money to a moneylender for safekeeping, and now he doesn’t want to give it back to me.”
“Don't worry,” she said. “I’ll make sure he gives you the money back.”
She went home, dressed up, took a box of jewelry and money and went to the moneylender. She told Kurd:
- After I come in, you should come in immediately after me and demand the return of the money.
She commanded her black maid:
- When the Kurd receives his money, go in and say: “The gentleman has arrived.”
Seeing a beautiful, elegant woman with a box full of money, the moneylender greeted her very cordially.
She told him:
“I would like to leave this box with you for safekeeping, since I am leaving to join my husband in Basra, and the road is dangerous because of robbers.”
At that moment a Kurd entered the room and demanded his money. The moneylender immediately returned them. Then, laughing and dancing, a black maid came in and exclaimed:
- Dear Madam! Your husband has arrived!
The woman took the box and said to the moneylender:
“Since my husband has returned, there is no need for me to give you my jewelry for safekeeping.”
And she began to dance with the maid.
Seeing them dancing, the moneylender jumped up and also began to dance.
And the woman said to the moneylender:
— I’m dancing because my husband has arrived. The maid is dancing because her master has returned. Kurd is dancing because he got his money. Why are you dancing?
To this he answered her:
“And I’m dancing because I’ve never met such a cheat as you.”
